DAILY WARM-UP 12/14/10: Wild Thing

Today's daily warm-up is a wild-thing ape creature. Spent about 3 hours on him; I got really carried away by his facial details and texture. He went through some changes while designing him, but I am happy with how he turned out. Here he is in greyscale...

Here is the process... you can see the changes he went through...

Kosar's CLOWNIN' AROUND Mask Featured in New SEILER Illustration

When my friend and amazingly talented caricaturist and illustrator Jason Seiler asked to use my CLOWNIN' AROUND mask I designed and sculpted (pictured left and below) as reference for one of his illustrations titled CLOWN BE GONE, there was no hesitation from me. Jason and I attended the American Academy of Art together, and it has been really fun following Jason's work over the years and seeing how far he has come, especially now to have my work honored in his work! Check out his new illustration painted as a promotional piece for Richard Solomon Artists Representative...

Here's what Jason said in his blog:

"I need to thank my good friend and talented artists Anthony Kosar for lending me a clown mask that he designed and made. I used his mask for reference and decided to keep my character close to his design as a nod to him and his great work. Check out Anthony's work here.
Thanks Anthony, you da man!"
~ Jason Seiler

Thank you Jason!

Make sure you check out Jason's AMAZING work on his website and blog!!

My CLOWNIN' AROUND Mask is a half-mask designed and sculpted for Zagone Studios in 2009 for the Halloween 2010 season. With the half-mask design, the wearer's lower jaw and chin is exposed and becomes part of the mask, giving it a much more unique, animated, and life-like quality than most masks. The version Jason used as reference was my prototype paint sample with a jester hat. The final production version the studio went with for cost and fit is the version pictured with a baseball cap, which is the version available for purchase at Halloween stores everywhere.

And here I am "CLOWNIN' AROUND" in the mirror
after painting the mask at Zagone Studios in 2009...

Final Mask with Baseball Cap Available for $30 USD + S&H

Contact me if you would like to purchase this Halloween mask signed.
NOTE: Jester Hat Version NOT available for purchase. Baseball Cap Version only Available.

A HISTORIC UNVEILING!

THE SPIDER—cloaked, fanged nightmare in black—delivers swift justice with a pair of .45 automatics. Midnight shadows cast doom over exclusive Sutton Place—under attack by new evil in terror warfare—a sinister criminal mastermind in power armor named The Iron Man!

Read the story (originally The SPIDER: Satans Murder Machines) that Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster used for a 1940 SUPERMAN comic strip and that Stan Lee/Larry Lieber used for the 1963 story in TALES OF SUSPENSE #39!!

DAILY WARM-UP 12/8/10: North Pole Night Shift

This poor little elf has been working the night shift at Santa's shop for over 1000 years, and is still waiting for his promotion! Today's daily warm, my sleep deprived elf, took about 2.5 hours. I had fun on this one. There is still more I'd like to clean up, but as always, I have to move on to my real projects. Here he is in greyscale...

Here is the process...

... and here is a detail ...

So, to all those artists who pull regular all nighters (myself included)... be careful, you may end up looking like this!

DAILY WARM-UP 12/3/10: Alien - Part2

Well, I started this guy as my daily warm-up on 12/1/10, didn't get a chance to continue him yesterday, so I finished him as my daily warm-up today. Spent an additional 2.5 hours on him. If I were to make him a finished piece, I'd go even tighter on his details, and give his hands more expressive character, but I came to a point where I just had to move on to my actual projects and start a new character for the next daily warm-up. Above, he is in a violet misty setting. Below he is in "classic" green in a bluer setting. I thought he worked both ways, but I favor the violet one. What do you think??

And here is the final greyscale version...

Here is the process...

And here is a detail, a portrait which kind of is like the way my other warm-ups have been, so perhaps, I got two in one...

I really got carried away by his ribcage and abdomen, and if I were to continue him, I'd really go to town on those details...

Aidan's Monsters!!!

About a month ago, I came across Aidan's facebook page and was instantly moved. Aidan is an amazing 5-year-old boy who was recently diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia on September 13, 2010. To help his family cover the medical bills and all the 3 years of chemo treatments he will have to go through, this brave little boy is selling his drawings of monsters! He has sold over 7,000 prints of his monster drawings so far!! His story is touching so many lives and inspiring so many people!

Sharing Aidan's love for monsters and all things scary, I purchased one of his prints! Having a love for werewolves, I got his Wolf-Man No. 1 print:

He reminds me a lot of myself at that age. Like him, I've been drawing monsters since I can remember, and am still fascinated by them. However, Aidan is a lot braver than I ever was, and my heart goes out to him during his road to recovery. To help keep his spirits up, I sent him a few monster goodies! Here is a picture of Aidan wearing one of my Gargoyle masks that his family posted on the Aid for Aidan Facebook page!

In fact, last week, Aidan and his monsters were featured on ABC World News with Diane Sawyer and John Berman. In his interview, Aidan is holding the Gargoyle mask I sent about 45 seconds in, you will see the horns! Watch the interview here and see more of Aidan's amazing story...

DAILY WARM-UP 12/1/10: Alien (W.I.P)

Though my favorite thing to draw and paint are faces, for today's daily warm-up, I decided to zoom out a bit. So I did an alien monster. I painted for about an hour and 45 minutes, but still have a ways to go. I have to get going on my real projects, therefore, I will continue painting this one as tomorrow's daily warm-up and will hopefully have a finished piece then. As I mentioned before, I LOVE to paint faces, so that is where most of my attention was at today. Tomorrow I will focus on the body and arms and hands. Anyway, I wanted to share this work in progress. Here is a detail:

CHECK BACK TOMORROW FOR A COMPLETED PAINTING (hopefully)!!

DAILY WARM-UP 11/27/10: Furry Beast

Today's daily warm-up is a continuation of my warm-up from 11/24/10 of a demon. I wanted to see what it would have looked like with hair, and well, here he is. I spent about an additional hour and forty-five minutes on him, building off the hour and a half demon face I did on 11/24. Above, the beast has stripes, but below is without stripes... Which do you prefer?

Here is the greyscale...

Here is the process beginning with the demon into the furry beast...

Here is a detail of the striped version...

Here is the original demon I did as a warm-up on 11/24/10 in case you forgot...
